Oscar Oiwa's Solo Exhibition “Oil Octopus in the era of turbulent currents”
We are pleased to announce the solo exhibition of Oscar Oiwa titled "Oil Octopus in the era of turbulent currents" to be held at Shibuya Hikarie in the spring 2024. Our publication “Art for the First Time” will be available at the venue.
Oscar Oiwa is an artist renowned for his humorous expression of a unique worldview filled with social satire. His works, characterized by intricate details and bird's-eye view compositions, have garnered admiration from fans worldwide. Many may remember his significant solo exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo in 2008 and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa in 2019. Additionally, he has showcased numerous site-specific works that leverage regional characteristics at venues such as Faret Tachikawa, the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, and the Setouchi Triennale.
This exhibition, centered around the fantastical aquatic creature "Oil Octopus," which appeared in his 1999 work "Aquarium," reflects Oiwa's concerns about the global environment. It will feature new paintings and recent large-scale sculptures exhibited throughout the venue. We invite you to enjoy the drift of these charming characters living in turbulent times as you explore both the interior and exterior of Shibuya Hikarie.
